Chapter 30

Old Friends, New Friends

Mary knocked on the door of Kelly's room first. Getting no answer she walked to Bill and Susan's room and knocked again. Kelly opened the door. Mary was not surprised, but teased her saying, “I'm sorry I obviously have the wrong room.”

Kelly came right back saying, “My dear lady, I think you are in the wrong building!” Then laughing, she opened the door wide to let her in.

The Fredrick's had met Mrs. Claus briefly at their last visit and dined with her and Santa on Christmas Day, but never really had the opportunity to talk at any length with her. They were pleased that she sought them out and asked them to join the 'scouting' party as she was now calling it.

“You both are perfect for our needs right now,” she was explaining. “Bill with your engineering degrees you can be a big help working with Jim Atherton and Whitey Slippenfall in establishing the basic needs of the village.”

Bill said, “Whatever I can do, I am happy to do it. Susan and I owe you everything.”

Mary smiled at him and turned to Susan and said, “And you my dear, your architectural skill will be of immense help. Most of the elves will want your assistance in laying out their new structures. By the way, how bad is your morning sickness?”

Kelly shrieked loudly and said, “You didn't tell me that!”

Susan looked thunderstruck at Mary and said, “How could you know? Bill and I haven't told our parents, or my company! We wanted to wait until the second trimester to make sure everything is alright. Was that a guess?”

“I could see it in both your eyes the moment you stepped off the train,” she stated. “You know Santa is not the only one with abilities. I've picked up a few tricks in the 100 years I've been around.”

“I am sure,” Susan agreed. “But if it is okay, we would like to keep this a secret from everyone, except our parents. At least for a few more weeks.”

“Too late for that,” laughed Kelly. “But hey, they won't hear it from me if that's what you truly want.”

Mary said, “Let me guess, I would say you are what, two, or two and a half months along? I think you are worrying needlessly, but if that is your wish. I would like permission to tell Nick, though.”

“Of course,” Susan agreed. “And to answer your earlier question, it is not too severe, but some mornings are worse than others.”

Mary nodded and said to Kelly, “And now to my wonderful reimagineer. You, Susan and I are going to design the center of the village and develop the look and feel of the Visiting Center for starters. I want it bigger and better than we had here.”

“That sounds like fun,” Kelly said enthusiastically.

Mary continued, “We had developed the Visiting Center long after the village was established and though I was pleased with how it came out in general, I would have liked to develop it from scratch.
